The Commons: Academic Support & Tutoring Services

Students are invited to visit the Commons, 1st Floor of the Evans Library, where tutoring and academic success coaching services are located.  The Commons is also home to various Student Success Programs: TRIO, EOP and Accessibility Services. At The Commons, students can work with a peer and/or professional tutor in their academic coursework: homework assignments, test-preparation and general study-skills, time management, writing and research projects.

The Commons is open Monday - Thursday, 8am – 5pm; Fridays, 8am – 4pm

Evening and weekend virtual tutoring is also available

Academic Tutoring and Success Coaching is critical to your success as a student at FMCC. Being supported through your academic journey will aid in your success and future goals.

Students can receive help from both professional coordinators and peer tutors on a walk-in or an appointment basis during scheduled day and evening hours.

Dos and Don’ts of Academic Support

DO

  • Bring your assignment, text, notes and other needed supplies
  • Have a positive attitude regardless of the task
  • Provide feedback for the tutor on what works for you and what doesn’t
  • Plan enough time to complete your work
  • Professional and Peer tutors are available as scheduled in the labs
  • Some tutors have appointment-based meetings with students
  • Please contact the tutor via email and arrange for an agreed upon meeting time

DON'T

  • Expect the advisor to do the work for you.
  • Expect tutors to perform miracles on last minute requests
  • Tutors won’t run interference on the student’s behalf with the professor
