Receiving College Credit
SUNY FMCC offers a variety of ways to earn college credit towards your degree. Many students have accumulated credit from other sources prior to enrolling at SUNY FMCC. You can also earn credit based on your life experiences and by examination.
Ask the college you previously attended to send an official transcript to our Registrar’s Office. Courses eligible for transfer must be from a regionally accredited college and must carry a grade of “C” or better. This includes college classes while in high school sponsored by colleges other than SUNY FMCC.
SUNY FMCC has written articulation agreements with Career and Technical centers such as the HFM BOCES or other secondary schools that enable students to receive college credits for classes taken while in high school. Contact your high school guidance office or technical teacher to request an articulation validation application.
Students seeking credit for military education and training must request an official record of their military education be sent directly to our Registrar’s Office. Examples of military education transcripts include the AARTS, SMART or CCAF transcripts. The credit equivalencies recommended by the American Council on Education will be considered; however, SUNY FMCC will make the final determination of transferability.
Life Experience or Experiential Learning Credit may be awarded for non-collegiate life experience that is educationally relevant and is equivalent to course content according to specific criteria. Students are responsible for documenting the experience and will work with the appropriate academic department for further information no later than mid-term of the semester prior to the one in which credit is to be granted.
Credit may be granted for a passing score on externally administered examinations including but not limited to Advanced Placement (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP). You must arrange for an official score report to be sent to our Registrar’s Office from the testing agency that administered the exam. An AP score of 3 or higher generally is eligible for credit.
Transfer Appeal Process
When you transfer into any SUNY school you will receive a transcript evaluation as close to the time of admission as possible and will receive written information about the credits that were accepted for transfer. If you disagree with your credit evaluation, you have a right to submit an appeal. To do so, simply contact the Student Development Center at (518)736-3622 x8104 to schedule an appointment with an advisor.
If we need additional information about the course, you will be asked to obtain a course description or syllabus before a new evaluation can be completed. You will receive a new evaluation as soon as possible after we have received the necessary documentation to reevaluate your transcript.
If you still do not agree with the college’s decision regarding the granting or placement of credit that you earned at a prior SUNY institution, or you have not received a response in 15 business days, you may appeal to the SUNY System Provost. You can submit the appeal by filling out the student appeal form at https://system.suny.edu/academic-affairs/student-mobility/student-transfer-appeal-process/.

Start with the FAFSA application if you haven’t already and work with our Financial Aid Office if you have questions or need assistance. Please also fill out the short FM Foundation scholarship form located in your Admissions portal. Financial aid and scholarships cover all or a significant amount of the college costs for the majority of our students.
Information on the types of scholarships available can be found on the attached document.
Complete the short writing sample located in your admissions portal to help us determine if you may need additional writing support. Unlike other schools, a mathematics placement exam is not required at SUNY FMCC.
In order to attend a college in New York State, proof of immunization for Measles, Mumps, & Rubella (MMR) or an approved exemption is required. Proof of immunization for Meningitis is not mandatory but the completion of the form is required. Further information is provided in the attached documents. Additional copies of the required forms are also included.
After completing your writing assessment if required, you will be encouraged to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor located in the Student Development Center to register for classes. For the Fall semester, appointments are typically available starting in mid to late April. For the spring semester, appointments are typically available in mid to late November. The earlier you make this appointment, the more likely you will have flexibility in making a class schedule. Waiting too long may limit this flexibility in choosing classes as many courses will be filled to capacity.
In order to qualify for reduced in-state tuition, New York residents from counties outside of Fulton and Montgomery must submit a Certificate of Residence each year while enrolled at SUNY FMCC. Students who live in Fulton or Montgomery County are required to verify their address on the student self-service portal (MYFMCC) each academic semester.
Further information is provided in the attached documents to assist you in this process.
